Jobseekers granted free travel on buses
9:33am Friday 4th January 2013 in Jobs News
JOBSEEKERS in York have been granted free bus travel in January to help them find work.
Bus operators including First, Arriva, Coastliner and EYMS are supporting the national Bus For Jobs scheme.
Anybody who has been unemployed for three months to a year is eligible provided they have a valid JobCentre Plus Travel Discount Card. The initiative is particularly aimed at young people.
Peter Taylor, First’s operations manager in York, said: “More people travel to work by bus than all other forms of public transport combined, and this scheme simply underlines just how important the bus industry is to the future of the local and UK economies.”
Arriva Yorkshire’s managing director Nigel Featham said: “Free bus travel will enable jobseekers across Yorkshire to make the most of the transport network this January and hopefully widen their opportunities for work.”
City of York Council leader James Alexander said: “We must continue to work with partners across the city to provide our residents with access to support like free bus journey agencies.”
