RESIDENTS across York are being urged to arrange street “departies” to mark the Tour de France coming to the city this summer.

The second day of the Grand Depart, the opening stage of the legendary cycle race, will set off from York on Sunday, July 6, and City of York Council has produced a short guide to help people who want to get into the Tour spirit.

The publication includes tips on what needs to be done to arrange a street party and contact details for help and advice.

It is designed to support the York: Be Part Of It programme, an arts and cultural festival running throughout the 100 days leading up to the Grand Depart and including the day of the race itself.

Coun Sonja Crisp, cabinet member for leisure, culture and tourism, said: “The Tour de France is a spectacular sporting event and it’s also an opportunity to create one big party atmosphere in York.

“Street parties are free, fun and a great way to meet your friends. This guide is a short and easy read on how to hold a street party, and if people haven’t yet enjoyed one where they live, now could be the time to throw one.”

The guide is now available at york.gov.uk/tourdefrance

The project York: Be Part Of It is intended to showcase the city’s creative and cultural talent and for residents to play a part in community projects, contemporary and performing arts, poetry, music, street theatre, regional touring work and other events.
