Councillor Jane Evison, cabinet portfolio holder for economic development, tourism and rural issues, said: “Today’s announcement regarding the route of the 2014 Tour de France is an occasion for the whole of Yorkshire to celebrate.
“While the council is disappointed that the world’s most prestigious cycle race will not pass through the East Riding, residents will still have the opportunity to see the race, with most of the East Riding just one hour away.
“Hosting one of the world’s biggest sporting events in Yorkshire will have untold benefits for the whole county in terms of tourism and boosting the local economy and the council will make every effort to capitalise on this.
“East Yorkshire already has a proud cycling tradition and hopes that the legacy of the Tour de France will be similar to that of the Olympic Torch Relay in attracting more people to the sport.”

York Outer MP Julian Sturdy has urged communities and businesses to make the most of the Tour de France coming to the city.
Mr Sturdy, who is a vice-chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for 2014 Yorkshire and the UK Tour de France, lobbied the Government on behalf of Yorkshire's Back le Bid campaign and said: "I am delighted the Tour de France organisers have appreciated the iconic nature and beauty of York and that has been recognised with the second day of the tour starting from our great city and heading out through my constituency to Knaresborough.
“The Tour de France will be a unique advertisement for the whole of our county and I am thrilled at the potential effect the event will have on our local economy. With a worldwide television audience of 3.5 billion people in 188 countries, the Tour de France will be a fantastic opportunity to show the world that what York and Yorkshire have to offer.”
“While the Olympic Torch relay was a big event last year, it will be surpassed in scale by next year’s Tour de France. Each night of the Tour, 1,200 hotel rooms are booked and 2,000 journalists travel with the race along its route.”
“I am looking forward to working with Yorkshire-based colleagues of all political persuasions over the next year as a vice-chair of the All-Party Group and I will do all I can to make sure the event is a massive success and one to remember for years to come."
Mr Sturdy also said he had already signed up as volunteer when the Tour comes to Yorkshire and encouraged others to follow suit.

Hugh Bayley, MP for York Central, said York was the region's most important cycling city and it was great for it to have such a prominent role in the Tour de France.
"Let's hope Sir Bradley Wiggins will have a yellow jersey when we wave off the cyclists from York," he said.
"This will showcase the city to the world. Roughly 20 per cent of journeys in York are carried out by bicycle, which is hugely over the national average.
"Cycling is already big in York and I hope the race will give us an opportunity to encourage more people to cycle, because it reduces traffic congestion, is good for the environment and is good for people's health."

Julian Smith, MP for Skipton and Ripon, has urged communities and businesses across his constituency to make the most of the world’s largest annual sporting event coming to North Yorkshire in 2014.
He said: “I am delighted that the Tour de France organisers have recognised the unique beauty of my constituency. I have been working hard to ensure as many parts as possible are showcased.
“With a worldwide television audience of 3.5 billion people in 188 countries, this opportunity to promote where we live to tourists and where we work to businesses is too good to miss. Skipton and Ripon will benefit massively from this event and will give the Tour de France a great welcome.
“We saw how big the Olympic Torch Relay was last year but the Tour de France is on a much bigger scale. Each night of the Tour, 1,200 hotel rooms are booked and 2,000 journalists travel with the race along its route.
"In the coming months, I will be travelling the route the Tour de France will take on a special Doorstep Tour and working with communities and businesses to make sure we explore every opportunity for promoting and showcasing our area to a worldwide audience.”
The MP also confirmed the launch of a cross-party group to promote and support the Tour de France in Yorkshire at Westminster.

A spokeswoman for the North Yorkshire Moors Railway said she was ‘gutted’ that the race will not be visiting the North York Moors.
Marketing manager Danielle Ramsey said that tour officials had paid visits to the steam railway several times with Gary Verity, of Welcome to Yorkshire, and she had hoped the route would come through the area.
She said she did not know why it had not been chosen. “It’s a great disappointment,” she said. “We are very gutted. It’s such a shame for the area.”

Selby and Ainsty MP Nigel Adams has said he is delighted that the Tour de France 2014 will be making its way through part of his constituency on Sunday July 6 when one of the world’s largest sporting events makes its Grand Depart from Leeds.
Mr Adams, who spoke in a Westminster debate recently promoting the benefits of his constituency as part of the tour’s route, said: “This is more fantastic news for Selby and Ainsty residents.
"Following on the back of the Olympic Torch success for our area, I am delighted that the Tour de France will be going through my constituency giving everyone an opportunity to witness yet another global sporting event”
The Tour de France route takes in part of the Selby and Ainsty constituency passing several villages including Green Hammerton on the second day in Yorkshire on the York to Knaresborough leg.

County Councillor John Weighell, leader of North Yorkshire County Council, welcomed the inclusion of lengthy stages of the Tour in North Yorkshire, and predicted major economic benefits for the county as a result.
He said: "We are one of the sponsors of the bid, and we are absolutely delighted with today’s announcement of the route.

A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said hosting the opening stages of the Tour De France in 2014 was an honour for both the country and the region.
He said: "North Yorkshire Police is looking forward to helping make the event an enjoyable experience for the many spectators and tourists expected to visit the area.
“The force has only just been informed about the route that the Tour De France will take through North Yorkshire, therefore plans will be developed in due course.
“However, we will build on the experience of last year’s successful Olympic Torch Relay, working closely with the organisers, partner agencies and the other police forces in the region, to ensure that the race stages pass off smoothly and safely.”

Leaders of Hambleton District Council have said they are "bitterly disappointed" that the world’s greatest cycling race is not coming through the district.
Areas around Northallerton, Thirsk, Bedale, Easingwold and Stokesley were not included in the routes announced today in Paris for the Tour de France's Grand Depart in Paris in 2014.
Council leader, Coun Neville Huxtable, said: "We are very disappointed that it won’t be travelling through Hambleton and its glorious countryside. But we will be working hard to promote the area and hope to welcome many of the millions of visitors to the race into Hambleton.
“We are obviously delighted that the race is coming to Yorkshire and we congratulate Welcome 2 Yorkshire on its coup. We look forward to watching it and we wish those organising it the best of luck.
“This is a fantastic event for Yorkshire – and a great opportunity to showcase the area.”

Andrew Jones, MP for Harrogate and Knaresborough, has welcomed the news that Harrogate and Knaresborough will both be a part of the Tour de France’s journey through Yorkshire.
Andrew, who is vice-chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on the Tour de France’s Grand Départ in Yorkshire, said Harrogate’s famous hospitality would be on full display when the Tour finishes its first day on the Stray in Harrogate.
“I am delighted with this news, and the people of Harrogate and Knaresborough will be excited that the route comes to this constituency twice and the swell of tourists will make the occasion unforgettable.
“Having the route covering so much of Yorkshire’s iconic countryside is a great advertisement for this county, it will be broadcast to millions of homes across the world, and the viewers will not be disappointed.
“What Harrogate and Knaresborough has to offer as a backdrop for great sport is just fantastic in terms of business facilities, accommodation, historic sites and beautiful scenery as well as many passionate sporting fans. James Brennan, head of marketing and sponsorship at York Racecourse, said they hoped to host the start of the race from the Knavesmire on the Sunday.
He said they had worked with Welcome to Yorkshire and the Tour de France organisers, who have visited the Knavesmire, and they would be "delighted" to host the event if chosen.
He said the impact on York would be huge.
"We know what sport can do in terms of exciting and thrilling people. To have such a famous event coming to the city is great news.
"We will see if we go on to be more directly involved as things pan out," he said.
He said the racecourse fully appreciated the economic impact sporting events could have, generating £58 million impact through its own racing events for the local economy.
"The figures are double that for the weekend," he said. "It's that number of television eye balls, billions of people, watching the race in such a wonderful city and such a wonderful county.
"You can see the subsequent huge economic benefit and it's a real tribute to the work of Gary Verity and Welcome to Yorkshire and everyone who has backed Le Bid.
"It's a marvellous prospect for the city and we're ready to help in any way we can."

The staging of the Grand Depart is estimated to boost York’s economy by more than £73 million, based on an analysis of the impact on London in 2007.
When the Grand Départ was held in London and Kent in 2007, it was estimated to have brought £88 million to south-east England and generated £35 million of media coverage.
York Minster has been used in the marketing of the bid and will appear throughout the Grand Départ media coverage. Two billion spectators will also watch the event worldwide. More than two million spectators watched from the sidelines in 2007.
The council also expects the teams and administration associated with the tour to boost hotels, restaurants and shops from several days before racing begins.

Scarborough has missed out on playing a part in the 2014 Tour de France, with Scarborough Borough Council's chief executive Jim Dillon saying: "While of course we are disappointed that the Tour De France will not be passing through our borough in 2014, we are still delighted to be joining in the county-wide celebrations today.
"Le Tour will be a world-class event for Yorkshire which will show the county off at its very best to a worldwide audience of billions, and we should all be proud to say we will be a part of that experience regardless of the route it will take.
"Local residents won't have to travel far to cheer on their cycling heroes and soak up the atmosphere, and the many thousands of extra visitors who will come to Yorkshire during Le Tour will undoubtedly have a very positive ripple effect on the wider region, including our borough.

London can stuff its olympics up its proverbial velodrome. The Tour de France is not seen as a political tool, such as the Coe-limpics was used in Britain.
In France 'Le Tour' really is an egalitarian sport-fest, and I trust this concept will not be hijacked by commerce and capitalism.
Thus I for one an rather pleased that 'Le Tour' is starting off in York; and motorists might have to suffer the arduous possibility of York being a traffic-free zone for the day.

I am a working man who's employer will not care if the tour is in town or not and will expect me to be at work on time regardless .
I know this will bring visitors to the city, and I welcome it, but it will make traveling around quite difficult for those not involved.... Not a whinge but just explaining my view.

Millions of tax-payers money has been paid out by councils to attract this event, and they should provide details of where the millions they predict will come into the economy will end up ?
If it is the tourism industry, then why can't this industry pay the cost of attracting it, instead of using tax-payers money which could be better spent on more needy areas ?

Perhaps you would have preferred them to be transported by helicopter, so as they could get there, have a day's conferences, and return within hours of setting out. However, I suspect they took the train. It's considerably cheaper.

Why did they have to be in Paris in the morning, when there was the media event, dinner and fireworks in Leeds in the evening ?

This is the problem with Labour stooges, they haven't got a clue about the economics, like those they support, they bluster and use oblique explanations and truly are 'something for nothing' merchants who waste money on vanity projects.
Tourism will get some free marketing, and a boost for a few days. I doubt that there will be much of a legacy though. It's not like there will be any buildings/regenerati
on left behind like the olympics - remember them - they took place last year ? !!!

But seriously, then, why do you not ask /them/ all your questions? I'm beginning to think these questions of yours are a little bit rhetorical....
You also make mention of 'the buildings and regeneration left by the Olympics last year'. I do remember them , (how could one forget, given they were rammed down one's throat morning, noon and night), I am not really sure I follow your comparison here, because I doubt if York City Council are planning to build a velodrome or a new pointless shopping-centre on the edge of The Knavesmire, on the strength of one weekend's cycling event. But they might have to repair some pot-holes in the roads,and I suspect you and I could both feasibly benefit from that. So I don't think you need fear too much being spent on 'infrastructure', unless you feel we ought to have the army manning gun-positions on the towers of York Minster.

I am most fortunate that I m not so easily deceived, Scarlet P. And I don't think "Buzz Light-year" is deceived, either. I cannot speak personally for him or indeed "Ablaster", who did at least put the point rather bluntly. But the approach to take is not to follow a party line, dare I say it...hook,line and sinker. I do not, as my comment on the 'other' cycling thread in this paper might allude.
To be honest, I was generally not aware who 'James Alexander' actually was, or which political party he sided with. I don't think party politics has a place in local government; in fact i don't believe party politics has a place in Westminster. So I judge upon merits, and sadly for you the torys at High Office have no scruples whatsoever, and those in the regions tend to ape them if they can. Sad, but true.
I think this thread draws to a close. Feel free to have the coveted 'last word'.
