The first-ever Tour de Yorkshire cycle race arrives in York on Saturday.

The second stage of the three-day event is a 174-kilometre ride from Selby to York, culminating in two laps of the Minster city, before a finish in Knavesmire Road. The race starts on Friday with a stage from Bridlington to Scarborough, and finishes on Sunday with a final stage from Wakefield to Leeds.

After the success of street parties and community celebrations for last year’s Tour de France, plans have sprung up across Yorkshire for festivities to mark this event.

If you’re wondering where to go to enjoy the party, try some of these suggestions:

1. The E By Eck party will take place in Bishopthorpe Road on Saturday. With three live music stages, Yorkshire-themed stalls, more than 20 bands, buskers, entertainers, street food and children’s entertainment, the party will focus on the Bishopthorpe Road car park and the green opposite the Swan pub, until the race has passed by for the last time at around 4.30pm, when the street party will move into the road and continue into the evening.

2. Fossgate’s independent shopkeepers are putting on the Fossgate Festival. It’ll be opened at 9.15am on Saturday by the Lord Mayor and includes a beer festival, barbecue, cooking demos from the street’s Ambiente Tapas, and two live music stages – outside Macdonald’s furniture store and in Franklins Yard – and open studios at Rogues Atelier. The event supports SASH – a charity that helps young people out of homelessness.

3. The “Four de Yorkshire” beer festival is a collaboration between four pubs - the Waggon and Horses, the Phoenix, the Mason’s Arms, and the Woolpack – which is conveniently opposite the official public transport hub. The pubs will serve up 40 Yorkshire-brewed beers over four days from Friday. There will be live music at the Woolpack on Friday night, a DJ night on Saturday, and live blues on Sunday.

4. The race passes a few miles from Leavening, where the Jolly Farmers Inn will be showing the action on a big screen from 11.30am on Saturday and Sunday, and serving brunch with prosecco until 2pm.

5. Nun Monkton’s Yorkshire Heart Brewery has its own festival over the Tour weekend, and on Saturday evening, after the action finishes in York, there will be live music, food, Yorkshire real ales, lager, cider, and their own wines to enjoy. Camping will also be available.

6. The New Ebor Street Feast takes place on Knavesmire, close to the finish line. The festivities will include music and street food stalls, craft beer and local distillings, kicking off at 11am. Entry is free.

7. If the cycling doesn’t satisfy your sporting spectator needs, the York City Rowing Club is staging its Spring Regatta on the Ouse on Saturday morning. Races take place between Clifton and Lendal, from 9am.

8. On Saturday, there’s a live music event in Cherry Burton village hall, which is on the route, near Beverley. Acts include Paul Liddell, plus One Scotch, One Bourbon and One Beer. Doors open at 7.30pm for an 8pm start.

Tickets cost £10 in advance from Costcutter in Cherry Burton, Beverley Tourist Information centre, Wegottickets.com and on the door, subject to availability.
