FIVE people have been quizzed by police after being arrested in connection with a suspected hit-and-run crash in a York street which killed a ten-year-old boy.

The group, who are all male, from York and aged between 16 and 22, were today released on bail pending further enquiries after being questioned by officers following last night's tragedy on Holgate Road.

The victim - who has today been named as Sean Robert Harry Hamilton and was from the local area - is believed to have been crossing the road near Holgate Bridge, known as 'the Iron Bridge', when he was struck by a blue Ford Transit van at around 8.20pm yesterday.

He was treated at the scene by paramedics but was pronounced dead at York Hospital.

Police are still appealing for help to track down the occupants of the van, who are believed to have stopped at the scene before running away, leaving the vehicle behind.

Traffic Sergeant Andy Quigley, of the York Road Policing Group, said: “It is vital that people who can help the police enquiry come forward as soon as possible.

“Even the smallest piece of information could prove important. I am also appealing to anyone who noticed the blue Ford Transit van or Sean prior to the collision.”

TS Quigley added: “The death of Sean Hamilton is truly tragic and heartbreaking for all concerned.

“It is every parent’s worst nightmare to lose a child in such a way. Our deepest sympathy and support are with the family at this traumatic time.

“They have been assured that North Yorkshire Police is doing everything within its power to investigate the full circumstances surrounding the collision.”
