YOUNGSTERS from across York and North and East Yorkshire got into the royal wedding spirit and held events to celebrate Kate and William’s big day.

At many schools, pupils and teachers dressed up and staged mock weddings the day before the real wedding festivities in London.

In York, youngsters at Busy Bees Nursery “tied the knot”, acting out all the parts, while at Poppleton Ousebank Primary School two teachers dressed as a bride and groom as the festivities got under way.

Meanwhile at Saxton School, near Tadcaster, the school moved in to the local church to hold enjoy the celebrations.

Janet Colling, head teacher at Tang Hall Primary School, said the school’s 165 children had a fantastic day and each got a commemorative bookmark.

She said: “We thought it was important to mark the event as it’s an important thing for the children to remember.

“We transformed the school hall into a church and all the children acted out the parts from a traditional Christian wedding, as well as looking at weddings around the world. It was hugely successful.”

Monica Good, head teacher at Saxton CE Primary School, said the school’s 65 children were to sign a wedding guestbook to send to Prince William and his new wife, complete with photos from their celebration.

Mrs Good said: “It’s been a really fantastic week leading up to our wedding celebration, we’ve baked cakes and made bunting and all the children have had a wonderful time.”
