That was 2012, that was...

York Press: Review of 2012

It has been an amazing year for York and the region.

The city celebrated the 800th anniversary of receiving its Royal Charter from King John in suitably Royal fashion, with a visit from The Queen – in her Diamond Jubilee year. She handed out Maundy money at York Minster to 172 pensioners, and also had lunch at the Mansion House with winners of the 2011 York Community Pride Awards.

Throughout the year there were a series of events – culminating in a Charter Weekend – to celebrate the city’s anniversary.

But there was much more, too.

The Olympic torch was carried through the City and surrounding areas on its way to London, and York City completed a unique double with two Wembley trumps in the space of just over a week – first lifting the FA Trophy, and then winning promotion back to the Football League in the Blue Square Bet Premier play-off final. York City were promoted and also won the FA Trophy.

In between came the news that York’s long-awaited community stadium had been approved, along with new shops at Monks Cross.

The York Mystery Plays returned to Museum Gardens; Frankel – the world’s greatest racehorse – won at York races; and insurance giant Hiscox announced its intention to move to York, bringing 300 new jobs.

And then, of course there were the floods… Throughout the year, The Press has covered all these stories, plus many more too – stories that have been tragic, dramatic, colourful and sometimes comic.

Here is the chance to relive some of those memories...
