THE QUEEN and the Duke of Edinburgh have written to the Lord Mayor of York, thanking him for the warm welcome they received during this month’s royal visit.

Coun David Horton received the letter from Buckingham Palace, which praised the city’s kind hospitality to the Royal Party, which also included HRH Princess Beatrice of York, on Maundy Thursday.

Coun Horton said: “It was an incredible honour to welcome Her Majesty The Queen, and the Royal Party to York and we will treasure these memories for years to come.”

The letter read: “The splendid lunch at the Mansion House, the work of many hands, was a great highlight and complemented what was a memorable day.”

It went on: “On such a beautiful day, the Royal Party much enjoyed the opportunity to meet and see so many of the people of York who gave them such a marvellous welcome.”
