Former Olympic showjumper and racehorse trainer Harvey Smith will carry the Olympic flame when it arrives in York on Tuesday, it has been announced.
He will be the final torchbearer of the day, carrying the flame at York Racecourse.
Mr Smith, 74, will ride the final furlong of the Knavesmire then light a special on-stage cauldron.
Mr Smith said: “Having ridden for Great Britain in the Olympic Games, it’s a great honour to be asked to carry the flame in my home county. I’m delighted to have been asked.”
He represented Britain at the 1968 and 1972 Olympic Games.
At Knavesmire on Tuesday, he will ride Paddy, a seven year old showjumper.
Coun Sonja Crisp, the city council's cabinet member for leisure, culture and tourism said: “Harvey Smith’s inspiring record of achievement and his strong local connections make him a very welcome torchbearer to end the torch’s first spectacular day in York. We’re delighted he’s coming to join us celebrate the Olympic Flame visiting our city.”
