AS York prepares for the arrival of the Olympic flame on June 19, the council is informing residents of which roads and services will be affected during the two-day celebrations.

City of York Council said it would keep traffic disruption to a minimum and would activate a rolling road closure about 10 to 15 minutes before the flame and its escort of 200 cyclists leave York College at 5.15pm on June 19.

The closure will begin on Tadcaster Road’s in-bound lane and Blossom Street from 5.10pm to 6pm. The cross-town route of Rougier Street to Tower Street will be closed to through traffic between 5.45pm and 6.30pm and Shambles will be closed to vehicles and pedestrians between 5.45pm and 6.30pm.

The route will take in the Bar Walls and city centre before ending at Knavesmire for the planned free concert.

The second day will see the flame set out from York Minster at 7.44am where it will head out from under Bootham Bar on its way to the National Railway Museum, before it leaves the city on train, for Thirsk.

The council said there would be rolling road closures from Bootham Bar to York station and the National Railway Museum between 7.30am to 8.30am.

A spokesman for the council said: “Road users on both days are strongly advised to avoid these routes and allow plenty of extra time for their journeys, but listen out for traffic updates on local radio stations or on twitter at #YorkTorch.

“Timings could change subject to route alterations by the Olympic committee, or due to local traffic conditions.”

Before arriving in York on June 19, the flame will be in Selby and Tadcaster.

Selby District Council said the torch would arrive in nearby Camblesforth at 9am before heading to Selby for 9.15am, where it will be carried from Bawtry Road, on to Cowthorpe and along Leeds Road.

From there the flame will travel to Monk Fryston for 10.15am; Barkston Ash at about 10.40am; and Tadcaster at 10.55am.
