WARRINGTON'S Niki Birrell has made Paralympic history by winning one of Great Britain's first ever sailing medals.

The former Lymm High School pupil and his crewmate Alexandra Rickham have won bronze in the Two-person Keelboat event at Weymouth and Portland, after the final race - scheduled for this morning - was cancelled due to lack of wind.

The pair were in a position to challenge eventual silver-medal winners the USA for second place heading into the final day, but the weather conditions conspired against the GB boat to prevent them improving their standing.

Twenty six-year-old Birrell and Rickham, from Surrey, were two of three GB sailing medallists to secure their places in history this morning; along with Helena Lucas, who won gold in the single person Keelboat.
