VOTERS descended on the polls in higher numbers than usual to ensure Selby retained its Conservative majority.

Just over 44 per cent of voters turned out at polling stations across the district on Thursday, and selected Conservative councillors to fill 29 of the 41 seats available.

Independent candidates John and Mary McCartney won the Eggborough ward, and Labour councillors filled the remaining ten seats, with one other independent.

Stephanie Duckett, whose daughter Joanne died on April 23, won the Barlby seat with Coun Brian Marshall.

She said: “I want to thank everyone for their support since Joanne’s death and throughout the campaign, especially the people at Barlby Bridge. They never let us down.”

Coun Duckett who is now preparing to look after Joanne’s five children said: “I’m glad everyone has the confidence I can do the job and look after the children. This one’s for Jo.”

Coun Marshall said: “We work as a team, and overcome problems together. There have been a few surprises. We wanted Jack Crawford back, and we got him.

“We’ll be nominating him for vice-chairman of the district council.”

Jack Crawford, Labour, won his seat at the Fairburn with Brotherton ward, which he lost to Conservative Debbie Pound four years ago when he was Labour group leader.

Coun Crawford said: “I’m relieved about being voted back in. It was a bit of a shock when I was knocked out.

“It’s nice to get back representing people in the villages at that end of the district. We always feel on the edge and they need a strong voice. I hope I can be that voice.”

Coun Crawford said he would not immediately apply to regain his place as group leader.

Incumbent Labour group leader Steve Shaw-Wright retained his Selby North seat and said he would be reapplying for the position within the group.

“It’s been a long campaign, but fruitful.

“It’s been a reasonable day, and Selby continues to prove itself different to the rest of the nation.”

Conservative council leader Mark Crane also retained his seat. He said: “I’m really pleased the people of Selby have put their trust in the Conservatives again. I think the vote for us has reflected the national picture.

“People understand we are in difficult times, but understand why that is. We have got a new executive structure and service delivery vehicle to set up, and it’s up to us to make sure both are a great success.”
