Lettings: Semi-detched rental properties

We all know that the good old semi is the bedrock of the property for sale market – but what about when it comes to renting?

Naturally enough, apartments and town houses are popular when people move into the rental sector… but it appears semi-detached homes also have their admirers.

Although, unlike those in home ownership, it appears that it’s not necessarily families who opt for a semi.

Liz Allender, of Hunters letting, says: “I would say that it is mainly couples and young people sharing that opt for semi-detached houses. They tend to be younger people in their twenties up to their thirties – and people who are quite happy to rent rather than buy – renting is becoming much more popular these days.”

Of course, semi-detached homes have a few advantages over apartments – they tend to have gardens, for one thing, along with off-road parking and even garages.

So, if you are thinking of joining the semi crew then here are a few examples of what is on offer at the moment.

We’ll start with a couple on Liz’s books at Hunters. The first is a smart property in Westwood Terrace in the popular South Bank area, an ideal spot for access to the city centre, station and commuting routes. Warmed by gas central heating, the house has an entrance hall, lounge, kitchen with cooker and optional washer and fridge if requested. There are two double bedrooms and a bathroom with shower. You also have a small rear garden with shed. Hunters are seeking £625 per calendar month.

The second property from Hunters is an unusual one at Park Avenue, New Earswick.

Unusual in that it is a newly-built and well presented one-bedroom semi-detached house. The property offers a kitchen diner with electric cooker and fridge in the garage. There is a ground floor three-piece bathroom and hallway cupboard. To the first floor is the double bedroom and lounge with French doors leading out to a balcony terrace. Another big bonus is the integrated garage parking with remote control, providing parking for one car. This one is going for £575 pcm.

Linley and Simpson, meanwhile, have a pair of equally interesting homes. The first is in Nidd Close at Nether Poppleton which, as it’s close to the ring road, is very handy for commuters and the run into York itself. This is a modern two-bed end town house with a lounge, a kitchen/diner equipped with units including a oven and gas hob, a fridge/freezer, washing machine and dishwasher. There is also the added benefit of a nice conservatory looking out on a rear garden. Both bedrooms are doubles and there is a house bathroom. There’s also a single garage and off street parking. Offered at £725pcm.

The second is at Pheasant Drive in Acomb. This one is a three-bed semi which has an entrance hall, WC, sitting room, kitchen/diner with fridge/freezer, oven, hob, washing machine and dishwasher, two double bedrooms and a single bedroom/study. The bathroom has a shower over the bath. It also benefits from a rear garden, off street parking, double glazing and gas central heating. It is offered furnished at £695pcm.

Letters of Distinction, meanwhile, have a very smart modern semi in Lilbourne Drive, York. Spread over three floors. This home offers three double bedrooms, with the master on the second floor also benefiting from a walk-in wardrobe and en-suite shower room. The other two bedrooms are positioned on the first floor level along with the house bathroom including a rinse shower over the bath. The living room is spacious and has patio doors leading out into the rear garden. The kitchen is fully equipped with wall and base units and has washing machine, fridge/freezer and dishwasher appliances. There is also a ground floor w/c and additional storage cupboard and ample off road parking. This one is offered at £725pcm.

And Letters Property Management can offer a pair of semis in sought-after villages on the outskirts of York. The first is in Thompson Drive, Strensall, a recently refurbished property in a pleasant development on the edge of the village. It has a good-sized reception room, a dining kitchen with gas hob and electric oven and plumbing for washing machine. Upstairs there are two double bedrooms and a newly fitted bathroom with electric shower over bath. There is a long driveway and single garage and gardens to front and back. It is offered at £650pcm.

Down the road at Huntington, Letters have a smart unfurnished semi in Broome Close, a nice cul-de sac with good access to the ring road (available from March 6).

With a pleasant through lounge diner, a well-fitted kitchen with double electric oven, gas hob, fridge, plumbing for washing machine and a pantry, there is plenty of space on the ground floor. Upstairs there are two double bedrooms (one with fitted wardrobes) and a single bedroom. The recently fitted bathroom has a bath and a spacious shower cubicle. There’s a driveway and garage and gardens front and back.

Letters are asking £695pcm.

Finally, another village home, a very smart semi in Carrs Meadow at Escrick. This one is beautifully situated, overlooking the village green. It has newly-fitted kitchen with a good range of appliances.

As well as a smart lounge, the property also has a good conservatory overlooking well-maintained gardens. Upstairs there are two double bedrooms and a refitted bathroom with shower. Really nice home in a good spot, for which Churchills are asking £675pcm.
