WHEN was the last time you heard someone complain ‘they don’t make them like they used to’?

Probably not for a while and there’s a good reason for that. Not only are many of today’s off the peg materials superior to yesterday’s bespoke, the design of our living spaces has changes beyond all recognition - in just one generation.

Yes you could remodel your old house, but as one well known developer puts it, you’d need to spend £40,000 at least to bring it up to spec of a new home.

Then there are other considerations. Green considerations that also make economic sense both in upfront costs and reduced utility bills.

All of which means buying a new home has never made more sense.

Here we have a classic example why; Seven Oaks, which is a small collection of individually designed executive homes situated opposite Strensall Common.

The properties have been built to a high standard of finish and feature large rooms, not to mention open plan kitchen/dining rooms with bi-folding doors that open onto the garden.

This one is a fabulous four bedroom, two bathrooms detached family house and it has all the things we mentioned earlier.

Top quality materials dispense with the old ‘they don’t make them like they used to’ adage.

For starters solar panels provide hot water and there is a heat recovery system to supply the first floor radiators from a remote controlled gas central heating system. The system also supplies underfloor heating to the ground floor.

Then there is the clever additional electric underfloor heating to the bathroom’s tiled floors as well as dual fuel towel rails.

If that’s not enough tech for you, a mechanical ventilation and heat recovery system provides ventilation throughout the house, removing hot moist air from the bathrooms and kitchen and providing fresh heated and filtered air to the bedrooms and living rooms.

This place was evidently built to impress and we haven’t gone inside yet.

It certainly doesn’t disappoint when you do though. How about engineered oak flooring, to the ground floor, matching oak veneer internal doors and part oak staircase. Now that should grab your attention. This is no run of the mill development. Everything here oozes class.

No surprises, then, that the large kitchen/dining room features ivory high gloss units by Kutchenhaus with integrated Neff and Bosch appliances including twin ovens with slide and hide doors, an induction hob, dishwasher and fridge/freezer.

Bi-fold doors to the garden are de rigueur for houses of this quality but here you get two; one from the kitchen, the other in the spacious lounge.

A separate family room also seems to be an essential for any 2017 design, so naturally one is included, not to mention a utility room and cloakroom/WC.

Other luxuries include a built in surround sound speaker system that serves the lounge, family room and kitchen/dining room. There is also CAT 6 cabling for internet and a satellite dish connected to TV sockets in most rooms.

Further delights upstairs, where the first floor has four double bedrooms including a master with en suite. There is also a family bathroom with freestanding bath and a separate shower cubicle.

Outside there is a garage with remote controlled electrically operated roller door and the gardens are mainly laid to lawn with fenced boundaries.

You probably don’t need to be told that Strensall is a sought after village, due to its easy access to York and the outer ring road.

Seven Oaks is also in the catchment for Robert Wilkinson Primary Academy in the village and Huntington Secondary School which provides courtesy buses for students. Also York Golf Club is just up the road.

“The quality of finish is particularly impressive here,” says Scott Anscomb, managing director of Your Move Anscombs who is marketing the properties. “From underfloor heated engineered oak flooring on the ground floor to built-in speaker system in many rooms and wiring for a home cinema.”

And all this for £500,000. One day someone will take a look at the Seven Oaks development then complain ‘they don’t make them like they used to’ They will probably be right.
