Brian Page views a large Grade II listed city centre apartment and a spacious village home...and finds much to admire in each of them.

TOWN and village – this week we look at a pair of properties that, for different reasons, we feel are stand-out homes.

One is in York city centre and has been completely refurbished, the other is in the village of Wilberfoss and needs a little bit of TLC to realise its huge potential.

To Micklegate, first, then, where we find a fabulous Grade II Listed period home which has been comprehensively, yet sympathetically, upgraded.

There is an air of grandeur about the property, with its high ceilings, dramatic turning staircase and period fireplaces and sash windows.

The first floor of this gently sprawling apartment offers a double aspect lounge with vantage views across the hustle and bustle of Micklegate, contrasting with the quiet of the grounds of Holy Trinity Church.

There is a smart and stylish kitchen/dining room with an extensive range of wall and base units – with granite effect work surfaces – and a Range cooker (and you have an integrated dishwasher and a fridge-freezer). An inner hallway leads to a house bathroom.

The second floor, meanwhile, has three double bedrooms, a walk-in wardrobe store and an en-suite shower room to the master bedroom.

And then you tiptoe up the stairs to the top floor, where there is a characterful bedroom to the front with views of the Minster.

As a bonus, the property has a south-facing courtyard and off-street car parking. A great city-centre home, offered by Your Move Anscombs at a guide price of £425,000. Phone: 01904 621532.

Now, we’ll nip out to Hull Road, Wilberfoss, where we find the enchanting Hollydene, a delightful detached house with plenty of space inside and lovely gardens outside (truth be told I’m a little in love with this home).

“In need of updating,” say selling agents Chris Clubley, but for just a bit of work we believe you could have an outstanding house. And if you like gardens then there is a super one here… The ground floor has plenty of reception rooms with a bay-windowed sitting room to the front and a living room to the back and a separate dining room, also with bay window to the front. There is a dining kitchen and a ground floor cloakroom.

Upstairs there is a master bedroom with an en-suite shower room and three further bedrooms and a family bathroom.

So, plenty of room inside and a surprising amount of space outside, too… The garden is laid to lawn with well-stocked flower beds, shrubs and borders, and mature trees and bushes, and with pleasant seating areas.

In addition, the gardens house a number of brick and pantile outbuildings; including a stable/workshop which provides plenty of potential for conversion into an annexe, office or studio (subject to planning consents).

A large, pleasant home in a popular village within easy striking distance of commuting routes, Hollydene has a huge amount going for it.

Chris Clubley and Co are looking for offers in the region of £375,000. Phone: 01759 304040.
