FORTUNATE finds this week – two excellent period homes have just hit the market in the same street in Heworth.

And no, we are not going to use the old you wait for ages and then two come along at once line – even though it is appropriate. It’s enough to say that it is something of a rarity for two such fine houses to arrive at the same time.

The street in question is First Avenue, close to Heworth village and its range of local amenities and less than a mile away from the city centre.

We will begin at Number 24, a beautifully refurbished period property whose owners have skilfully improved the traditional features while introducing contemporary comforts.

Stepping through the imposing front door you find yourself in a hallway with stripped pine floors and pine doors opening to a spacious lounge with bay window to the front.

This room benefits from a high ceiling, cornicing and a handsome period-style feature fireplace with cast iron surround and tiled inserts housing a living flame gas fire.

There’s another warming aspect at the centre of the second sitting room, a feature cast-iron stove sitting on a hearth above stripped pine flooring and with light dancing in from French doors which open onto the rear courtyard.

Further down the house we find a superb dining kitchen, a beautifully finished space

with smart wall and base units with wood work surfaces over and flowing into a dining area. There is then a rear lobby with a door out to the courtyard and housing a ground-floor cloakroom.

Up the apples and pears there have been further improvements… the master bedroom has an en-suite shower room, there are two more double bedrooms and a single, served by the family bathroom.

And, just for good measure, there is a fifth bedroom on the second floor with built-in wardrobes.

An elegantly refurbished house with a lot of space on offer, it has been priced at £330,000 by Churchills (01904 646611).

And now, just down the road, we find an equally impressive property at Number 1 First Avenue (first of the First if you like).

This is another property which is smart inside and out – the front forecourt garden is smartly swept behind iron railings while to the back there is an enclosed garden featuring raised decking and seating areas (and a good view of the local church).

Again, period touches abound here, including original corbels and coving, while there is also very much a contemporary look throughout the house.

“A home with a wealth of character,” is how selling agents Your Move Anscombs put it, with a nod towards a number of wow factor additions.

The bay windowed dining room to the front of the house is light and bright and flows gently, open style, into a living room which has a multi-fuel stove set on a Travertine hearth with a beamed wood feature above. (How cosy this room must have been during this week’s winter freeze!)

The kitchen/breakfast room is a gem, fitted with a smart range of modern wall and base units with contrasting solid wood worktops and upstands and with appliances including electric oven and hob and integrated dishwasher and fridge-freezer.

A utility room and cloakroom and WC completes the ground floor.

Upstairs, there is a large master bedroom with fitted wardrobes and two further good sized bedrooms and a smart, modern house bathroom.

Another excellent offering which has been priced at £300,000 by Your Move

Anscombs (01904 621532).
