After the award-winning success of phase one, David Wilson homes’ Derwenthorpe development has launched a new batch of eco-friendly homes, Brian Page reports.

DAVID Wilson Homes have just launched the second and third phases of the company’s muchpraised Derwenthorpe development at Osbaldwick.

How timely then that the project is this week celebrating yet another major design award.

Run in partnership with Joseph Rowntree Homes, Derwenthorpe’s unique, eco-friendly styling has beaten off competition from more than 1,000 other housing projects across the country to take the National Housing Design Award.

It’s quite a coup for DWH, the latest in a string of honours that recently has included the York Design Awards for Best New Build Residential and The Press’s own Peoples Award.

As a naturally delighted Paul Hogan, sales director for David Wilson Yorkshire East, says: “From the outset we wanted to build homes of the highest quality.

The National Housing Design Award reflects the suitability of these homes to meet the needs of all kinds of buyers and is testament to the hard work that has gone into bringing this pioneering community to fruition after years of careful planning.

“These homes offer an ‘in reach’ and affordable opportunity to live in one of the country’s most exemplary properties.”

What’s more, best of both worlds, the development is not just a critical success with the industry experts, but – as The Press award highlights – has also been a big hit with house-buyers. The 64 homes available in the first phase of the project were all sold within 18 months.

Now come phases two and three, named the Lotherington Quarter and – with a tilt in the direction of its Rowntree partners – the Seebohm Quarter.

Looking at the designs, we would suggest more awards are on the way… In the Lotherington Quarter, there is a range of two and three-bedroomed house styles (cutely named the Bluebell, Daisy and Primrose) with prices from £189,995 to £209,995 – hence Paul Hogan’s “in reach” comment.

Of these, the Primrose, as an example, offers a very spacious (more than 20ft long) lounge and through dining room, a fully-fitted kitchen and cloakroom and store on the ground floor, while above there are three good-sized bedrooms and a house bathroom for that £209,995.

At the starter end, the Bluebell offers a similar layout downstairs with two bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs – and with the added bonus of a balcony as well as a south-facing garden. Great value at just under £190,000.

The Seebohm Quarter, meanwhile, offers four house styles.

The Moorhen is an end-terraced house, sprawling gently across three floors with a combined lounge/dining area with French doors open to the rear garden, a smart kitchen and cloakroom. On the first floor, off a long landing, there are two bedrooms and a house bathroom. The top floor is home to a master bedroom with ensuite shower room.

The Greenfinch, as either a mid or end-terraced, has a similar layout to the Moorhen, while the Falcon has an open-plan lounge/diner, a kitchen with utility room, two bedrooms and a family bathroom to the first floor and two further bedrooms and a shower room above.

And then there is the Swallow, again a mid or end terraced house with lounge/diner, kitchen and cloakroom, two bedrooms, a bathroom and a home office on the first floor and an impressive master bedroom with en-suite – and a balcony – above.

Prices for homes in the Seebohm Quarter phase range from £219,995 to £284,995.

Again, top value for money, especially when you consider the innovative design quality and the energy- efficient eco standards brought to bear on all the Derwenthorpe homes.

And, with Government help-to-buy schemes available at the development, we suspect phases two and three are going to be every bit as popular as phase one.
