Are you a city slicker or a country lover? Brian Page discovers a series of contrasting properties to help you make up your mind.
TOWN and country… this week’s lettings column was suggested by the juxtaposition of two very different properties in an advert by Linley and Simpson in last week’s Property Press.
It was fascinating (and a great example of the rich diversity of properties in the lettings market at the moment) to see a detached house in the country sitting just below a luxurious city centre penthouse apartment.
They were, in this instance, a village home in Appleton Roebuck and ultra-modern living style in the shape of an apartment in Hungate, right on the edge of York city centre.
Let’s don our Barbour and Hunters and pop out to the rural regions to begin… The detached house in Main Street, Appleton Roebuck, is a gem of a property, a light, bright and spacious home which offers great family living in a particularly popular village.
The house is offered unfurnished and, in simple terms, offers a sitting room with open fire, dining room/study, kitchen diner (with AGA and dishwasher among the integrated appliances) and with a utility room with washing machine off.
There are two double bedrooms with en-suite shower rooms, a double bedroom with access to the house bathroom and a further double bedroom. With a single garage, off-street parking and an enclosed rear garden it is a very smart package indeed and offered by L&S at a rental of £1,400pcm.
Back to town now to look at the penthouse apartment in Cordwainers Court, Hungate. This is a superbly furnished and well laidout flat with a huge amount to offer in its own right as well as being close to the city centre and all the fun York has to offer.
The apartment is accessed via a lift and is set on a floor of its own. It offers an entrance hall, kitchen with appliances, a large lounge/dining room, a double bedroom with built-in wardrobes, a further double bedroom and a bathroom.
Each room has patio doors onto a balcony (offering great views of the city centre and surrounding townscape) and there is a large terraced area.
With secure underground parking included in the deal, this is a city slicker offered at a rental of £1,500pcm.
So, that’s Linley and Simpson… here are some other contrasting properties on offer with other agents.
Starting with another town and country couple from Arena.
The first of these is another super home in Dunroyal Close in the village of Helperby. A spacious, wellmaintained four-bedroom detached family house, there is a lot of character on show here including smart stripped pine floors and a feature fireplace to the spacious lounge.
There is a newly-fitted kitchen/diner and utility room completing the ground-floor accommodation. On the first floor there is a master bedroom with en-suite, three further good-sized bedrooms and a house bathroom.
A double garage and pretty garden to the rear complete the package, for which Ashtons are seeking £1,200pcm.
Ashton’s city offering is, well, you could not get closer to the city centre… it is a recently-refurbished, spacious first-floor apartment in Castlegate, just off the Coppergate shopping centre.
The fully-furnished apartment, recently improved with a very contemporary feel including neutral decor, enjoys a beautifully-fitted house bathroom and fully-fitted dining kitchen with oak units.
There is a spacious lounge with large corner window giving views up Castlegate, a luxury fitted oak kitchen/diner with chrome fittings and integrated dishwasher, washing machine and fridge/freezer and a dining area with oak dining table and side unit.
The master double bedroom has a built-in wardrobe and en-suite shower room and there is a second double bedroom and luxury family bathroom.
A garage can be secured by negotiation.
This property is offered at a rental of £1,200pcm.
And now to Ashtons, who have our final contrasting couple for the week… The first is an immaculate terraced cottage in South View, Newton on Ouse, less than ten miles from York city centre (and served by two splendid pubs for those who enjoy such things).
Offered to let furnished or unfurnished, the house has an open-plan lounge/dining room and modern kitchen – to include oven and gas hob, washing machine and fridge/freezer – while to the first floor are two bedrooms and a house bathroom.
Wrapped up in mature gardens to the front and rear and with garage and off-street parking, it is offered at a rental of £650pcm.
And the city property? Ashtons have come up with a smart duplex apartment in the trendy Popeshead Court, tucked away in a quiet spot in the city centre. “An immaculate duplex apartment situated in the heart of the city centre just minutes from shops and the main high street,” is how the agents describe this one.
The unfurnished property consists of a lounge with wood laminate flooring and a modern kitchen with oven, extractor, fridge/freezer, washer/ dryer, dishwasher. To the lower floor, accessed via a spiral staircase, are two double bedrooms and a modern bathroom.
“Perfect for professionals working in the city centre,” concludes the Ashtons team. It is offered at a rental of £675pcm
