Swine flu warning for North Yorkshire and York mums-to-be and children

UPDATED: 08:23 03/12/09 DOCTORS have sent out a fresh swine flu appeal amid fears pregnant women and vulnerable children across North Yorkshire are not taking their chance to get protection against the virus.

People included in priority groups to receive vaccination against the illness are being invited to get the jab – but GPs say they are concerned many of those who are deemed to be in the highest risk bracket may be missing out.

NHS North Yorkshire and York, the region’s primary care trust (PCT), says some practices in the area it covers have reported not seeing as many expectant mothers or children in danger of becoming seriously ill from swine flu coming forward as they anticipated.

Their message about the importance of getting vaccinated comes after figures showed the number of people needing hospital treatment for suspected swine flu in York and North Yorkshire has risen in recent weeks.

Doctors say ‘at-risk’ children are those with underlying health conditions which leave them more open to the effects of swine flu, particularly youngsters who have complex special needs or ‘neuro-disability’ such as cerebral palsy, head injuries or dyspraxia.

The World Health Organisation estimates up to ten per cent of people hospitalised with swine flu are women who are more than three months’ pregnant.

Dr Phil Kirby, NHS North Yorkshire and York’s associate director of public health, said: “Although swine flu can be mild for most people, for others it is more serious.

“We are particularly concerned about pregnant women and children already deemed to be at risk from flu-like illnesses. These groups are likely to become more seriously ill from this new strain of the virus and therefore most likely to end up in hospital.

“I would strongly advise all those people who have been invited to have a swine flu vaccine by their GP to take this up. If you haven’t been contacted by your GP practice about getting the vaccine and you think you should have been, please get in touch with them.”

However, other North Yorkshire practices – such as Abbey Medical Group, on Tang Hall Lane, York, where huge queues formed this week – have seen high demand for the jabs.

Anybody worried they might have swine flu should phone the National Pandemic Flu Service on 08001 513100 or visit direct.gov.uk/pandemicflu More information about the vaccination programme is available at nhs.uk

On facebook there's a page called

"3 simple reasons why you DO NOT want to take the Swine Flu shot" ,

it lists the dangers involved in taking this jab of dangerous chemicals, articles about how governments & pharm companies are making £billions from this ,as they always planned and other reasons why people should NOT take the jab.
The jab has killed people and caused severe side effects. It has not been properly tested & is a money making schame by the pharm companies at the cost of human lives.
Dont take the jab. Protect yourself.

If the jab is so safe, why have so many countries banned it? Why is the German government giving its soldiers a different vaccine to what the general public are getting?
Why are so many doctors refusing to be vaccinated? Becuase the vaccine is more dangerous than the flue.
More people die each year from taking asprine then have from swine flue.
There is growing eveidence that this was grown in a lab and released so that the pharm comapnies could then make £billions from selling a vaccine.
The government have bought up millions of the Swine Flue vaccine but are now stuck with it as so many people are refusing to have it becuase they have become aware of the dangers involved.
That is why they are pushing it so much in the media.
Protect yourself from the dangers and DON'T take the vaccine. It has killed.

Wow, always the first to post on a swine flu topic too.

Seriously all vaccinations have their side effects. All medicines do!!!

If your fit and healthy fine, take a chance with the flu but if you are in an at risk group ask yourself is it worth getting the flu.
.
Me im diabetic and can easily say that im going to have the jab - Next week.

If your unsure talk to your doc, ask to speak to some of these doctors that are refusing the jab and find out why. Dont just believe the first crank that spouts conspiracy theories and government collusion.

How is that whole gig as Spelling Tsar working out by the way?

I am clearly about as competent at being a Spelling Tsar as the council is at project management and therefore I resign. Think I should apologise for my bullheadedness the other week. Although, I do stand by my comment on her illness, being caused by smoking.

How are these GPs issuing the invitations? I'm in the 'at risk' group and haven't heard a thing. I'm with West et al though as I believe it's blown out of proportion, more people die each year from ordinary flu. Plus all viruses mutate so you're only covered this year, next year will be a different flu and swine flu vaccine. Disease is nature's way of cleaning the planet, let's be green and not interfere (Andy and Prodigy Dave would be proud). Let's be honest Malaria in East Anglia would be a psotive step forward.
