A view to flats
10:56am Monday 22nd October 2012 in Letters By Reader's letter
EVERY TIME I walk into York via Fishergate, I pass the Ryedale building.
My husband worked there 24 years ago when every floor was used by different firms.
Now, it seems to only have one floor in use and it has been like that for a long time. I don’t know who owns it, but I am sure with imagination and money it could be turned into flats.
The top floors would have nice views of York and the residents could have a smile watching drivers having difficulty parking in Clifford’s Tower car park, pleased it is not them trying to do it.
Mrs M Robinson, Broadway, York.

I think a far better idea - if it's almost empty - would be to flatten it!
The Ryedale building has to be one of the worst examples of 60's/70's "brutalist" architecture in York, completely spoiling the vista in the ancient Clifford's Tower/Castle area of town. Almost on a par with Stonebow House and the Park Hotel.
Surely it could be replaced with something more in keeping with its surroundings.

That entire slice of land from Ryedale house right up to the banana warehouse should be flattened to make way for a modern covered multi-floor shopping and leisure complex with parking on the roof, and inside being big shops that currently cannot be accommodated in York city centre, restrurants, a cinema or something like laserquest, bowling, and an ice rink (though probably only a small one)... and with an indoor link through to the travelodge. then flatten the old tram shed and have more retail/leisure space there which goes to 2 or 3 floors like the rest of the development and linked by a bridge going over the road that also has buisnesses on (a bit like how the Eldon Square development in Newcastle has a bridge over the road). All the restaurants could have their backs facing to the tower with folding doors and decked terrances suspended over the river foss but under a glass roof to provide outdoor eating with a nice view (obviously getting rid of the car park around the tower and replacing it with parkland with a nice water feature in the middle)
