ON OCTOBER 17, I had to deal with two young offenders hawking at 9.30pm in the Heworth area of York.

They claimed they were on a scheme managed by the Middlesbrough Youth Offending Service (YOS).

One offender became repeatedly obscene, though not to me personally, and intimidating, when I refused to buy his wares.

I am a young strong male and was made to feel uncomfortable, on my own doorstep, by these two young men’s actions.

The next morning my mother, unfortunately, found scratches on her new car.

Through investigation, I have discovered that Middlesbrough YOS doesn’t rehabilitate young offenders by hawking, and this scam is well known in the Teesside area.

It seems these young conmen are starting to target York.

I would strongly encourage citizens of York to contact the police if they are put in a similar situation.
