Getting the hump with road’s ‘selfish’ residents

AS AP Cox states in his letter about Westminster Road, these are public roads (Letters, October 12). So 80 people from the Clifton ward appear to want a private road for themselves while continuing to drive down other roads. How selfish.

Westminster Road is one of the widest roads/streets in York, with some of the highest road humps of any street in York; only a fool would drive at any speed down that road.

I guess the residents of The Avenue and Westminster Road will happily drive down Bootham, Water Lane, Rawcliffe Lane and many other residential roads that are jammed with vehicles every day, unlike their roads.

Should all of York’s vehicle-owning, road tax-payers have a vote on who can have their own private road? Or should only the selfish minority decide for themselves?

Paul W Cooper, Woodlea Avenue, Acomb, York.

Unfortunately this attitude will prevail for as long as too many car owners insist on taking their vehicles out at peak times, many with sole occupancy, instead of considering alternative travel options for some journeys.
See the "using your car less" section pf York's iTravel website at http://www.itravelyo

Unfortunately this attitude will prevail...

What attitude, that of the writer, or that of the residents of The Avenue and Westminster Road who appear to resent non residents using what they consider to be "their" roads?

I very very rarely see any cars turning into or out of The Avenue, even at rush hour, so i really have no idea what grounds some of these residents have to claim "it's like a motorway".

On the odd occasion I do actually drive/cycle/walk down this road and Westminster Road, again, i rarely pass a single other vehicle. Even if i do, they're going about 10mph with the size of them speed humps!

Councillors, please ignore these vocal vociferous few who are not so much exagerating the situation as telling out and out lies.

Here's an idea, everyone who doesn't live in Westminster Road, chuck a penny into a bucket, and pay a squad of brickies to build a wall at each end of WR during the night and afix a big notice......."dear residents, here is your road.....exclusivly yours"

There is one thing that I hate, only marginely than politicians, is MINBYs.........it's the samewith the phone masts......we don't want them here, BUT will they give up their phones? will they b*****y

1000 vehicles a week, chelsea tractors, lorries, commercial vehicles etc, drive down Queen Annes Rd, to St Olaves school. They return up North Parade. Narrow roads totally unsuitable for heavy traffic. These idle egoistic ingrates consider it to be a one way system. Any resident who has the misfortune to encounter this daily mayhem is treated with disdain and contempt. These roads are effectually a Cul-de sac.In the past, residents have been verbally abused, forced to move house. Cars have been damaged. nothing has ever been done to eliviate this disgustig menace that is St Olaves school run

This must be a gross exaggeration with regards to the number and type of vehicles.

absolute fact, i have substantiated evidence, around 100 from 07-30 to 08-30 , around100 in the afternoon from 15-30 to 18-00 and later over 200 per day. i've counted them on many many ocassions. there use to be up to 2000 vehicles a week, morning noon and night, 7 days a week, to St Olaves school.

around 30 staff cars park on St Olaves premises every day, they all have to drive down/ up Queen Annes Rd/ North Parade . The days when teaching staff travelled to school by bus, bike or even walked, are long gone

Don't get so upset with Westminster Road residents.
The solution is cheap enough concrete bollards at the top of The Avenue junction with WR and again at its junction with Greencliffe Drive (gaps for cyclists to placate Peddaling Paul) not only stops the rats from using WR it stops the ones who live on WR from rat running up The Avenue and Greencliffe Drive.
Jobs a good un
We can then get on with the more serious problem of making residents only roads out of Shipton Road, Boroughbridge Road, Hull Road, Tadcaster Road etc I am sure we can think of others where irresponsible road tax paying motorists are taking advantage of residents

I can't see how they return up North Parade but I bow to your superior local knowledge.
The answer is in your own letter -move house -if you can't stand the heat.
