Even less value

THE Labour council in York proposes to increase council tax by a further two per cent, on top of the recent 2.9 per cent increase, even though Conservative chancellor George Osborne has set aside £450 million to help English councils to freeze council tax.

Is this further two per cent increase for the council’s slush fund, I wonder? The hard-working people of York are going to be made to pay this two per cent increase when they get even less value for their council tax as it is.

When collection of Council tax is shifted from National to Local government and working families are going to be stiffed for the first 15-30% of it, any 'freezing' will become mute points to those who previously didn't have to pay any due to their low wages.

If all we are going to hear is one change at a time, used as 'weapons of mass distraction', then the sum total of changes is going to lead to our society feeling like they are walking into quicksand until finally they suffocate.

It is a fact that council tax about doubled under the last Labour government (97-2010) but also many parish Council's went for the kill also by increasing their precept. We will be paying for a mad spending spree for a long time to come.
But take a step back, these people put up household taxes then add to that energy hikes, well above inflation and ask yourself where this money is coming from to pay these demands?
Even if it can be paid there will be less disposable cash to spend on British goods and services to help the economy.
What we need is some governance that is in touch with reality!
