System failing
9:32am Wednesday 17th October 2012 in Letters By Reader's letter
INDUSTRIES have to answer to shareholders. Shareholders want increasing dividends.
Efficiency savings can achieve this, but to limited effect.
So the alternative is to increase prices to the consumer, be it clothing or groceries or the fuel we use in cars or in the home. Increasing dividends forms the basis of a capitalist society.
It is the only system that works, but it could work better if there were not so many crooks running things.
Not a couple of days go by without the national press reporting another case of fiddling, insider dealing or a large fine being imposed on some company or bank.

They don't always get them though. Many companies have paid no dividends for years.
