Germany Beck: Raising costs

THE Soap Box Letter of October 9 raises an important point regarding the Germany Beck development and the raising of the A19.

This is not an easy operation; to build or rebuild a road similar to the A19 can cost between £16/20 million per mile, according to statements in Hansard; costs rise continuously and during construction. The road in question could involve almost one mile.

To raise it as well could most likely double the costs, without including the Landing Lane junction.

No wonder Persimmon Homes, Yorkshire has not mentioned this in its proposals.

The Department for Transport will have a great interest as it will be expected to provide funds.

Look, it's not rocket science that when you build a development on previous unspoilt land then that soak availability has been lost and flooding is more likely than before. The idea to build ever more on green land further increases the flood risk. As far as the Germany Beck development was concerned, the impact statement should have made clear that there was an increased risk of flooding. Who read it? Nothing ever changes.
