Too easy to spend

THE easiest thing in the world to do is to spend someone else’s money.

Hence Ed Balls tells us that if Labour are elected next time around, he intends to spend and spend and spend.

That tells us he has learned nothing from the last time he pushed someone to do it.

The phraseology “spend, spend, spend” reminds me of a Pools winner from Castleford, Ms Viv Nicholson.

She said she would do it and did. She spent hers in style, she enjoyed it while it lasted and, above all, it was her own.

Unlike the brass that Ed Balls and Co intend to fritter away, if given the chance.

I don't suppose borrowing almost £12 billion next year to give away to China, Argentina, India, Russia and many others exactly qualifies Cameron and Co as being fiscally responsible either?

Although it seems counter-intuitive, spending in a recession is a recognised way of avoiding even more disasterous consequences. Many economic bodies are suggesting this course of action...including the IMF and others.

In terms of action on the economy, whether or not you support Labour, the evidence is that Ed Balls has ben right in his views about the correct pace of dealing with the deficit.

As for repeating his mistakes...weren't we, as a country, simply overtaken by events largely outside of our control? Easy to blame in retrospect and try and score political points...but does anyone really believe that the Tories would have been tougher on regulating the bankers?
