Why demolish homes?
10:42am Friday 12th October 2012 in Letters By Reader's letter
Walking through Bootham Park Hospital grounds recently, I was astounded to see that the nurses’ homes were under demolition.
Our local authority must have given permission for this to happen. Surely with today’s housing shortage, these houses could have been renovated to help the homeless. It is scandalous!

It's the least they can do to give something back for all the money they have been making out of housebuilding in York since the recession supposedly started. They can't fool me with their pleadings - there are thousands of new houses going up all over York - the press just don't advertise them because they are sold on the QT. There is no recession in housebuilding in York, I know it, Jezreel, Buzz and mandms know it and so do the council. That is why the council keep their affordable housing policy target so low, its to help the housebuilders make even more profit. York is a paradise for housebuilders don't be fooled by anyone who tells you otherwise, it's all a con !
The land and the flats belong to the hospital and they need it to extend the hospital facilities which will be very soon no longer able to sustain the growing population and area that the hospital covers. The cost of making these buildings habitable was millions of pounds anyway, who was going to pay for that?

Why on earth is the housing situation in York the problem of York Hospital? They have their own very real problems and if they didn`t want to sell because they knew they would need to expand further then so be it.
Those that are not used are regularly sold for housing, and have been for decades. The site has been unused for years. The demolition is a political move designed so that people will not criticise the wasted empty buildings. The site will continue to be dormant for years - just wait and see !
I blame the housebuilders - it's all their fault !
