Keep buses local

LOOKING at all the sterling work done by many small rural bus companies, it has to be said that First attracts many complaints in York.

Many letter writers have complained now in The Press about the problems that exist with large companies running our transport these days.

The big question that has to be asked is: how long is this constant list of complaints to continue? It would appear that the First York complaints system is not working and needs to open a local office in York with helpful staff like we used to have.

The replies and returned answering to letters is not been received well from those that have complained in the past.

Keith Chapman, Bus user watchdog, Custance Walk, York.

•WITH reference to the controversy surrounding the proposed changes to the number 11 bus route and it not doing the South Bank loop.

For years Bishopthorpe passengers and South Bank residents have all been urging the council to make Balmoral Terrace/Queen Victoria Street one way. This could easily be done with very little upheaval and would need only a couple of altered traffic signs.

If this was implemented, there would be no need for the bus to stop running down there as traffic would flow freely.

If the direction of travel was from Knavesmire Road towards Bishopthorpe Road, the turn would be easier for the bus and quicker, as it would not have to double back on itself, especially at peak times.

At present it only takes one inconsiderate, impatient car or van driver to create a ‘‘face-off’’ with neither being able to reverse due to all the parked cars.

Mrs P Whitlea, De Gray Place, Bishopthorpe, York.

Mr Chapman is spot on with regard to First's complaints procedure.

I believe they commit themselves to responding to complaints within thirty days. I've given up submitting any comments, because it's rare for them to answer at all, let alone within the specified time-frame.

I contacted Simon Pearson at First Bus in August when I first heard of the proposed changes to the No. 12 service in Haxby running only once an hour. I pointed out that the 8.20 service from West Nooks was very well used by full fare paying workers starting at 9am, and asked that this would be taken into account when the new timetable was decided. I was assured that this would be the case, and yet now I find there is an
HOUR and 17 minutes between buses on a morning, either at 7.50 or 9.07, one being far too early and the other too late for most workers. The only option is the No 1 which goes to the Theatre, when many people work at Stonebow side of town, this is just not satisfactory, it gets caught up in traffic along Clarence St. and Gillygate, taking twice as long to get to town as the old no 12 and involving a long walk accross town. First say the no 12 service was not well used, but it was very well used at this time, so where is the sense in knocking off probably the busiest and most profitable bus of the day. Its diabolical that people are just left stranded like this and First ought to be ashamed to call this a service!

West Nooks to York city centre appears to be 4.6 miles, according to Google Maps. Why not abandon these patently awful bus operators and cycle instead?
