No excuse for abuse

THE spotlight on any sexual abuse, particularly of allegations made against Jimmy Savile and others in the entertainment business, will help a lot of women who have lived with the pain it caused for years.

More important, it has to be the catalyst for a heavy crackdown now on such behavior, wherever it happens and whoever is involved. Equally, those who cover up for the guilty should be punished whoever they are. Further, those who use positions in religous, teaching and care organisations to find victims or cover up for those who do should be banned immediately and for ever.

Just to point out the current situation is that it is simply 'allegations' that have been made, nothing has been proven yet and this is what the Police is there for. Also, I find it suspicious and a bit off that these people wait until after he's dead before making claims. If he abused them, speak out about it when he's alive so he gets punished.

If you'd watched the documentary about Savile, or read anything about the victims of the alleged abuse, you would know that many of them did report it at the time, but were ignored or punished for "lying". And if you knew anything about the way sexual abuse makes its victims feel, you might understand why some of them didn't feel able to report it at the time. They would have had their names dragged through the mud, been accused of making it up, or told that they were asking for it anyway. This is the sort of thing that women who try to report sexual assault are subjected to, and the fact that Savile was a famous and powerful man would have made it even more difficult for them to be taken seriously.

Too much has been hidden in the past and it needs to be brought out and attacked and punished now, wherever and by whoever it happens.
