Reverse the costs

JUST one more comment in the bus versus car debate which I think has not been mentioned yet.

From where I live (between Malton Road and Stockton Lane), a return bus ticket to the city centre at £4 is much more expensive than parking for two hours (£2.40) giving time for shopping, errands and coffee.

Surely these costs should be reversed if we are to be discouraged from taking our cars into York? I also cycle and walk when I can.

Jill Shepherd, Elmpark Vale, York.

Maggie T deregulated the bus industry, so point the finger at her if you will.

It costs me £2.20 each way when I only want a couple of things from town, but can drive in and park at shoppers car park for less than a pound. Then people wonder why out of town shopping is so popular

Jill, you've only compared 1 of the costs of your trip in the car whereas a bus ticket includes all of the cost to the bus company. A better comparsion would be the cost to rent a car by the hour from CityCarClub, about £8 per hour plus mileage.

No one in their right mind calculates the cost of something in that way if they already own the asset. Not even HMRC.

If your argument was correct, then the governement's mileage allowances woudl allow for the cost of fuel, maintenance and hiring a car. Based on the governement's calculations, the writer's journey would have cost £3.60ish. Still cheaper and more convenient than a bus.

I used the bus yesterday to go from Hull Road to Monks Cross, I waited for 15 minutes at a stop after walking five minutes to get there, got a total of four buses and had an old woman cough all over me and for two of us, it cost £7.40 (bought a day rover as I couldn't get a straight answer as to which way would be cheaper from the First phone line.

Undoubtedly, it would have been cheaper, quicker, easier and better for my health.

The cost of running my BMW M3 is about £5.00 per day
this includes

depreciation
insurance
road licence fund (tax)
maintenance
tyres
and fuel

it goes where i want it to go when i want it to go there and if its late its nobodies fault but my own

so £8 per hour is a bit steep !

How much profit do CityCarClub make per hour ?

totally agree bring down bus fares, for me and my child its well over £5 for a trip to town, but where i park its only £20 for 4 hours, as for the cost of running a car depreciation etc, this will happen if its sat on my drive too so would much rather use ithat then pay a fortune on buses that are often late, and take forever to get where your going

I've just re-read this and have come to the conclusion that it is one of the worst comparisons I've heard.

I'm all for Councillors coming on here - but I don't think you should post comments that are this ill thought through.

The whole point of a hire car is that you only pay to use it when you need it. Therefore, the relatively high costs involved are off-set by the fact that you incur no costs when you aren't using the car.

Why would someone hire a car to nip in to town, browse the shops and have a coffee?

The point of the letter is, if you want us to stop using our cars, then the buses should cost us less than it does to use the car.

And here is our problem...
We have councillors who are sticking their heads in the sand about the issue. Rather than deal with it.
I wouldn't mind paying the money asked by first if the busses were on time and clean. But they are not. A trip to monks cross or des outlet for me. Shame for the independent shops in the city who are struggling financially but getting no help from the council to increase footfall.
