Market values

LIKE Max Hagen (Letters, October 3), I was amazed at the cost of the pork pies, among other products, at the Food & Drink Festival, particularly when York boasts such contest-winning pie makers as Wilson’s, Richardson’s and Neary’s.

I declined those on offer in Parliament Street and found excellent products in the local butchers’ shops where I purchased first-class pies at almost half the price of those at the festival.

I was also rather surprised to find such products as olives, Thai food and Turkish delight being openly sold under banners that proudly proclaimed Yorkshire food.

I urge local folk to support their local shops where they will find quality food at more reasonable prices.

I also urge the promoters of the festival to consider carefully for future events before York becomes branded as the rip-off capital of the north.

Bob Redwood, Main Street, Askham Bryan, York.

What a good point. Why are pies being sold at a higher price in the City centre during a heavily advertised, highly staffed, food festival more expensive than at a local butchers?

Again, well observed! What on earth are Olives and Thai food doing in York. What an absolute disgrace. I'm pretty sure that Section 4 of the York Insular Act of 1923 made it a hangable offence to offer 'foreign' foods in York.

Next year can we please have a York Made Pie and Peas event instead.

Olives in York!!!
It's enough to make you join the BNP

Also I've noticed an Irish pub in the city. Trying to put the Mick back in Micklegate I expect.

It's everywhere. My local Spar is selling Swiss rolls and Viennese whirls.

Part of it is down to the eye-watering cost of renting a stall at one of these events, unfortunately

Spot on!

I took the advice of the letter and went to my local butcher.

I threw up. In a glass fronted counter there was a Barnsley Chop for sale. When were South Yorkshire products made permissible?!

Don't get me started on Betty's Scandanavian inspired menu - they should be driven out of the city.

Why the pathetic attempts at humour? The fact is that food prices at many, but not all of the Festival commercial outlets were high. When I see a small pork pie for sale at £2 I walk on. There are many excellent food shops in York that deserve your custom, but if the Festival wants to offer interesting and seldom seen food items at sensible prices I will buy.
I tried some venison this year, cooked it according to instructions but wont bother again as the taste was disappointing.
I suspect that the Food Festival brings in many new tourists as the P&R I use was much fuller than usual and if these visitors develop a liking for York the Festival has achieved one of its aims.

When I first moved to York the first food festival I attended had amateur chefs in coppergate selling their wares. I'd never eaten so well and do miss the fact that little bit of the festival is gone.
