Musical memories

IT was sad to hear of the passing of Burt Bell recently. Burt used to run the old Rowntrees pensioners’ choir, where I was hired to rattle the old piano.

We would always finish a concert with We’ll Meet Again when we played at old people’s homes.

A decade ago, Burt would be a young 85 in those days, and his favourite song was Who’s Taking You Home Tonight, which was the last waltz for a previous generation.

There was a slight hiccup in our routine when we were all thrown out of the dining block at Rowntrees, along with their brass band and a lot of other groups when Nestlé sold off the building.

We’ll meet again, Burt.
