They must do better

I spent four hours marooned in traffic on Thursday night around the campus and Fulford Road.

Nobody knew what was happening. Why on earth wasn’t there decent information on the radio? Why weren’t there any decent road signs? Many drivers were heading towards the problem rather than away from it. Why weren’t there any traffic people overriding traffic lights, or at roundabouts to optimise traffic flows?

This congestion and the way drivers were unsupported was by far the worst experience I have had. The police must do better than this.

Stuart Moore, Prospect Bank, Bramham, West Yorkshire.

I'm a bit tired of all this "someone is to blame" crap.

If it's grid locked how does Mr Moore expect the signs to appear? Pretty sure they've not got wings

the police? what have they got to do with this? fulford road is congested because cemetary road is closed inbound because of gas works for 4 weeks then tower street closed because of the flooding so every car heading in to the city from the fulford junctions of the A19 and A64 were forced down the same route which only had three options. round towards nunnery lane, down picadilly and round fishergate to foss islands road.

yes police have the ability to override traffic lights by placing a uniformed officer at them. whilst that officer is directing the traffic. Just who is going to deal with the policing of the city?

the police have better things to do than make sure you get home quicker.

the council are trying to clean up the city after the floods.again you fall down the priority list. what should have happened is they should have reopened cemetary road whilst tower street is closed.

Blame, blame, blame and above all the police. Pathetic.

In all fairness the sign informing motorists that the A19 is shut inbound into York has been on the exit from the bypass at the roundabout for some days now, with no signage on the the A64. Poor in my opinion

Look at the latest news and then blame the police?

Always have to find people to blame. Tiresome letter - weather happens, get used to it.

Which radio station were you listening to? And before you left Bramham, did you look at the Press or York Council websites?

Totally agree with many of the opinions above...whether it's the NHS, Social Workers, Teachers of the Police it's just so easy to get into a 'something must be done' mentality.

When it comes to paying the taxes required to have all this pandering, I wonder these people support tax rises?

Ridiculous blaming the Police and if any of them read this...don't let this sort of stuff get you down!

Thing is, I can understand a rant like this as it is happening, when you are stuck in a tailback, after all - we have all been there. But to get home and then put such nonsense on paper.....well, I know Bramham is a bit sleepy, but our letter writer needs to get out more!

The simple problem is that one main road (the A1079) was carrying two main roads' worth of traffic (if not more), well over double the normal average... very very few roads in this country still flow when you double the number of vehicles on them, so congestion will result - simple as that.

Can I just ask why all the electronic signs were blank? Are they still in use? It used to be they had messages like put your seat belt on, don't drive when tired wouldn't it be a good idea to have up to date information on them which would have been very useful this last week

I was also stuck in traffic around Fulford last Thursday. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the works on Cemetery Road didn't appear to have been started; certainly nothing was going on at the time, given the floods. Perhaps the local councillors of that area could have asked for Cemetery Road to be temporarily re-opened to help ease the congestion?
