Plenty of fare-paying bus passengers gave their opinions on the letters page on Tuesday (September 25).
Don’t forget why First wanted to run the buses – they get paid handsomely to do so. But with rising costs is it now enough to provide a profitable service for them you may ask?
Few realise that First are also paid to operate another local public service, Transpennine Express trains (a First/Keolis partnership since 2004), the one you travel on to Manchester Airport, Scarborough etc.
For last year, they received an eye- watering subsidy of £107.7 million – even the West Coast Main Line got six million quid.
Is it any wonder then why First want to run the railway and leave their unprofitable buses?
Check out the facts in October’s Modern Railways magazine (“Collared”, Page 22) if you do not believe what you have just read.
