That’s our banner on TV

THE archive picture of Sir Alec Douglas-Home’s visit to York during a general election (Yesterday Once More, September 24) brought back memories.

Queen Anne Grammar School held its own general election and a friend and I decided to support the school’s Conservative candidate – and also support Sir Alec.

On the day of his visit, we nipped out of school at lunchtime (probably without permission) and bought two garden canes and a roll of wallpaper lining from Woolworths.

Back at school, these were made into a banner and as soon as afternoon school ended, we cycled down to Kings Square and unfurled our banner with the immortal slogan “Do us a favour, don’t vote Labour. For a Britain in bloom, vote for Home”.

That is very probably our banner in the archive photograph. I was told that it appeared on ITV’s News At Ten.
