We must learn to care for our living planet

I FOUND the article by Kate Lock (A black day for bears, Sept 21), very depressing.

I am afraid to say over the last few years humanity has become selfish beyond belief. They could not care less about the future or what’s in store for the next generations so long as they’re happy in their own worlds.

Well, the Mayans or Nostradamus may or may not be wrong about the end of days on 20-12-12, but something is definitely happening to our planet and some generation in the future will suffer.

And I believe that war and the car have played a major part.

Some people believe that the earth is a living organism. Who are we to deny that fact?

Children should be taught to respect and love the planet from the day they start school.

If we aren’t careful, and it is true that the earth is a living organism, I think the day will come when the earth turns on us because it will have had enough of what’s being done to it.

Oh dear! I think you'll find that's all a big hoax.

Not this year but one day the Sun will explode into a red giant and wipe us all out.
Do you think stopping driving, erecting giant wind turbines and listening to Algore will change any of that Robert?

It would make for an interesting job interview after school.

What qualifies you for this job?

I have a GCSE in loving the planet.

Welcome to the world of banking young man.

By the time the Sun expands to envelop the Earth it is highly unlikely that anything resembling homo sapiens will still exist there; by then the species will either have become totally extinct or have scattered to the four corners of the universe (or however many corners the universe might have).
And it is just possible that “stopping driving, erecting giant wind turbines and listening to Algore” might in some small way have an influence on which of these it will be.

If there is a site available for a wind turbine near Robert in New Earswick I am sure he will be happy to see one.

The earth is a 6,000,000,000,000,00
0,000,000,000 kilogram ball of rock.

Thank god it isn't a living organism, because its dookies would destroy worlds.

I always laugh at people who claim that humanity is getting worse. Robert clearly has no grasp of history; or perhaps he would prefer a return to the good old days of slavery, racism, sexism, homophobia, world wars, communism etc etc. There are still massive problems, of course, but at least we're widely aware of them and are making progress.

Amen to that Matt except that you didn't mention over population, consuming more than we can replenish.
That problem is getting worse, GM food crops might be one answer but not the complete cure. In any case, much of our food crops ends up being converted into making damaging ethanol.
BTW, the electric car is as good as dead!

Yeah, agreed that over population is a problem, but it's a problem that's derived from better medicine/reduced mortality/less war. Fortunately it seems that as countries get richer their birth rates go down.

In the mean time, we should certainly try to reduce our use of resources; one good way of doing that is to reduce or cut out meat from our diet. Lots of food crops have ended up being converted to biofuel, but far more of it (something like 1/3 of grain) is used as animal feed.

It's overpopulation that's the problem Robert. It's plain, simple and screamingly obvious.
You are correct about war though; populations always boom after a war.
But why do you hand-ringers never ever offer it as a cause of all our shortages?
Your not a 'watermelon' are you?
Green outside but red inside.
