Call to put market back into Parliament Street

A P COX from Holgate got it spot on last week when they wrote about York market (Letters, Sept 20). Everything said was true.

Over the past few Mondays the council has let York traders go back to the original home of the market in Parliament Street.

All of these Mondays I have been in town and the market was alive again for a few weeks.

Why has it been shoved back into a back street where nobody goes?

It’s time York city council listened to the people of York and put the market back into Parliament Street.

Yeah
Then the council can in the space build a shop big enough for PRIMARK to fit in cos it's the only big chain missing from York !

as a child and y oung person, I loved to go down to York Market on a Saturday with my mother. we walked round the big variety of stalls, from clothes, to food, and
pots and pans. the chickens in the little cages, the ladies with their eggs and curd.
the novelty stalls, the home made sweet stall the dearnleys used to have.
So many local people there.
It had so many supporters, I cant think why it was removed to the much less space in the Shambles.
Does anyone remember the
old couple who used to sing near the station (very badly)
wasnt there a man with a barrel organ and little monkey on a chain too.
the Dearnleys home made sweets, The Penningtons fruit and veg, the egg and curd ladies with their covered baskets, so much to see and buy.
