Wheels in motion

What practical common sense the Lord Mayor and the leader of the council have shown in visiting Dijon (The Press September 20) to see how its city council is tackling the same problems as York is facing.

All historic, tourist cities are having to address the same demands, such as: the maintenance and commercial use of historic buildings; meeting the conflicting needs of pedestrians, cyclist and motor vehicles in mediaeval streets; providing better public transport to housing and stores on the ring roads.

Sometime in the future York will be investigating state-of-the-art urban transport systems. I don’t doubt that the civic party quizzed Dijon council on the snags and benefits of the tramway system it has recently installed – just as Dijon councillors came here to study our Park&Ride system.

It is no advantage to rate payers to have councillors reinventing the wheel.

How nice that they had a trip to Dijon at the taxpayers expense and how sad that they couldn't find out what they needed to know over the internet by a video conference. If they plan future sorties I will be happy to come along for free and take notes?

"The first line of a two-route tram network opened in Dijon ... within budget and six months earlier than scheduled" (Railway Gazette)

That looks promising, but surely it should have been officials rather than politicians who were sent, to better learn the technical lessons.
