Liberal U-turns for all

The Deputy PM beat a hasty retreat on support for 20mph speed limits after local Liberals let him know their lack of support.

A letter received from his office states that “given the evidence in favour of adopting 20mph limits in residential areas we are hopeful that the policy motion will be passed at autumn conference”. I presume by ‘we’ his office was referring to Clegg himself.

Indeed, controversial plans for a blanket 20mph speed limit on York’s streets “have been backed by the Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg” (The Press, September 4).

Typical Liberals, all things to all men but no actual politics. Or just U-turns for all!

Owain Gardner, Fulford , York.

Can add it to the list of u-turns including
scrapping tuition fees and not trying to clear the deficit in one parliament.

There are more than that - off the top of my head:

Pasty tax.
DLA mobility cut for those in residential care.
Sentencing discounts.
Static Caravan tax.
Cap on tax relief for charity donations.
Something about buzzards, I forget what - either taxing them, shooting them or maybe shooting them, then taxing them.
Scottish independence referendum
Ofsted inspections without warning.
Selling off forests.
10% housing benefit cuts.
Bookstart
The free school milk u-turn after Thatcher snatcher echoes.

Am sure there are more, seem to recall the Guardian said there had been 45 and that was ages ago. Anyone would think didn't know what they were doing.... :-)

There is no u-turn here at all. This is a pathetic letter from failed Labour election candidate Owain Gardiner.

Natonaly Lib Dems support more 20mph zones where they are wanted locally. Local York Lib Dems do not want them here everywhere. Very simple, very consistent. Nothing strange, no u-turn. Purely pathetic that James Alexander writes to Nick Clegg, who doesn't see his letter and his office sends a standard reply, saying nothing of interest/new.Sadly James Alexander then distorts it.

Please explain what you mean by 'Thacther snatcher' - are you meaning her removal of the requirement for Local Authorities to give children free milk? That was a choice she gave and the overwhelming majority of those councils stopping the free milk were Labour!

In August 2010, Anne Milton, a Tory health minister, suggested withdrawing the scheme that gives free school milk to under-fives. The idea was quickly stamped on by No 10 – presumably because of its echoes of Margaret Thatcher's scrapping of free milk for seven- to 11-year-olds in 1971. The chant at the time was Thatcher the milk snatcher.

Are you going to ask me questions about the other dozen or so u-turns I mentioned, or just this one?

I know that was the chant I have detailed why it was totally wrong as it was Labour that in the main chose to 'snatch' the milk. That is what I was querying, not the u-turns. I agree there have been plenty of u-turns, it is what is called being sensible and listening, not something your hero James Alexander would ever do.
