Spend it all now

WITH regards to Sue Nelson’s article headlined “Saving for a rainy day” (The Press, September 17), how I agree with her comments.

After seeing my own mother fall to dementia and needing care, it comes home exactly how unfair the system is.

Anyone who thinks “it won’t get me” had better think again; it holds no bounds.

The obese, smokers, drinkers, etc have a choice; dementia sufferers don’t.

We must be due the results of yet another ‘report’ as to care for the elderly. Sadly no one is prepared to act on the findings of these investigations.

In the words of Viv Nicholson, “Spend, spend, spend”.

In political talk this is known as kicking it into the long grass. In other words Parliament will commission a report to make it look like they are acting and then forget about it. One idea banded about was a one off payment of £35,000 but like council tax, you can bet your life the cost will go up. Then on the other hand we have those NICE people who decide if you can have the best treatment or not, without regard for what you paid into the system.
Why do you think there was a big push for home ownership during the Thatcher years'? (The route to most of the UK's problems)
Selling ones home appears to be popular these days in paying for care at the time of most need.
It makes you think what happened to the 'cradle to grave' ethic of social care in today's overcrowded UK.
People who saved all their lives and then need nursing care or expensive drugs have been had, no doubt about that. Extremely annoying when John Major, during the 90's talked about 'wealth cascading down the generations.' Sorry, just another example of that long grass.
