York needs a lesson in how to remember
11:32am Tuesday 18th September 2012 in Letters By Reader's letter
ON A recent business trip to Huddersfield I was greated by a statue outside the station of our past Prime Minster Harold Wilson, who was born In Huddersfield in 1916.
As I made my way to the office, I thought to myself why in York do we not have we a statue to honour the famous people born in or associated with our lovely city?
I am sure that a staute of one of the following who were born here could be designed and places in say Parliament Square:
• Frankie Howerd , born 6.3.17;
• John Barry, born 9.12.34;
• Judi Dench, born 3.11.33.
Other towns in the UK have built statues to remember their famous inhabitants. So why can’t we?

I'd be more inclined to go for genuine historic figures associated with the city, even if not born here.
I'd suggest Alcuin, Richard III, or Guy Fawkes.
Richard might prove the easiest for which to raise finance if the Leicester skeleton turns out to be his, and is returned to York for a decent burial.
Dont forget we already have some statues of notable figures in William Etty, Constantine, and (more controversially) George Leeman.
