Independents will still bring up the rear
I do hope that Liz Edge’s recruiting drive for independent councillors is a success (Letters, September 11).
However, I get the impression that the voting classes actually like political parties. No worry about what party candidates believe – they believe what they are told to believe. It’s all in the manifesto.
Moreover, come local election time, voters are impatient to register their satisfaction or dissatisfaction with central government. For that you need a party to vote for.
This is another truth universally acknowledged. Perhaps political parties should be banned, as were political uniforms. That might even things up a bit.
Even so, the independent councillor will still be last in the hierarchical chain of subservience, eager to serve residents, but a squaddie amongst squaddies.
Government employees are well named “officers”.
