Animal rights
10:56am Thursday 13th September 2012 in Letters By Reader's letter
THE ARTICLE in The Press of September 12 has, I think, an unfortunate headline: “Driver hit by stray horse”.
To me it seems more likely that the vehicle hit the horse, which I agree should not have been on the road anyway. This poor horse must have been injured by the impact, but no mention was made of this unfortunate creature.
I feel sorry for the driver of this vehicle, but this problem has existed for decades. City of York Council should take drastic and urgent action to prevent this sort of thing ever happening again.
One solution might be to ban anyone from owning or keeping a horse unless they owned or leased suitable fenced-off property, where the animals could roam freely.
Instead these horses are tethered on roadside verges day and night, winter and summer, where they have only a few square yards to feed and move about. This is quite unnatural for any animal.
Let us consider animal rights as well as human rights.
