Heavens above us

WHAT is going on in the skies above York? There is a constant roar of one aircraft after another, spoiling a beautiful autumn’s day.

Has the Rufforth airfield been extended without us knowing it?

At times I think I could be living near Heathrow, it’s that loud. Can anyone explain?

Ulricke Casterton, Holgate , York.

You should have got the Press photographer out to take a picture of you looking glum in your garden.

There is a guy constantly carrying out air acrobatics around Elvington. He obviously doesn't care about anyones right to a peaceful afternoon in their garden.

Yes, you're exaggerating.

I believe it is unlawful to perform aerobatics directly above built-up areas.
From the ground, though, it can sometimes be difficult to judge exactly where a plane is.

The sound of a jet engine only serves to enhance an Autumn's day for me.

But then that's because I'm an engineer and not a whiny ****.

Certainly not from Rufforth, Rufforth has been quiet this year.

All the light aircraft have been flying through.

I suggest Ulricke goes and spends some time near a busy airfield and then come back to compare.

There has certainly been no aeros done over York.

A York Firstbus passing one's house makes more noise.

I assume the letter writer doesn't recall the days of endless flights of RAF training jets rattling over Elvington/Linton up til the early-90's. Perhaps don't live in an area with several active airfields if you don't like aircraft noise? As for the aircraft in question, there are usually various NATO exercises running at this time of year which may well be the cause, more often than not it seems to be US F-15s (which are particularly noisy) rather than RAF aircraft

This past year has seen an increase in air traffic over York, but generally this seems to be through traffic rather than actually starting at one of York's airfields. Generally I don't mind it, especially when I can see a tow plane and glider setting up and about to do the split.... It's the military aircraft that sound like thunder which are annoying (though these aren't regular) as well as the planes that fly over slowly and keep changing tone.

Occasionally in Huntington you do get the odd interesting air craft flying over, such as when the boss of The Range goes to check up on his York store, or there might be the odd fly over by an RAF Sea King....
