That’s the struggle

THE social enterprise We Are Your Emporium faces closure because their Micklegate shop attracts a rates bill of £4,000. Welcome to the real world!

If this organisation cannot stay afloat despite having no rent to pay and operating on a not-for-profit basis, it is little wonder that so many small businesses struggle to survive and that so many shop units are empty.

I pay £20 a week council tax to have my (shared) wheelie bin emptied every 2 weeks. If they are paying £80 a week "business rate" and NO rent and still cannot make a go of it, then tough.
