Time to look at spending where it is needed

I HAVE now seen the newly refurbished clock in Coney Street, which took all of a few seconds, no pun intended.

Was £54,000 money well, spent? I think not especially when the council are predicting a massive overspend for this financial year.

Yes the clock does look like it should be there, but how can this amount of money be justified? I would much rather this had been invested into services the city needs.

I know many others will welcome the spending of £54,000 on one clock.

It took me seven weeks to get a new recycling bin which probably cost 54 pence, and again when I want something from the council I have to wait and be given excuses for their failures, but when it comes to spending £54,000 on a clock the cash is readily available.

We cannot take the clock back and demand our money back.

There seems to be a misconception that the cost of repairing the clock was borne by the council. In fact, the clock is the property of the church, who paid for the repairs with aid of grants from other organisations. As far as I know, no counccil tax money was involved.

A very timely response! Couldn't have put it better myself.

What's your beef with clocks?

Do you have a problem with time keeping?

Are you afraid of dying?

We all get old you know. We'll all die eventually.

Clocks are sexy.

Especially the big ones.

Well I wouldn't go so far as calling them 'sexy', but large clocks have a sense of purpose, an imposing feeling of belonging there. And seeing a big clock on a fancy bracket just makes you feel respect for the craftsmen who originally built it, and those who took great care in restoring it.

I feel sorry for Gary Mitchell.
When bitterness and a willingness to be swept up in anti-council feeling clouds your judgement is bad enough but to then publicly display that error... Oh dear.

I have seen the new clock and I think it was worth every penny. It looks spanking and the little guy turning and the chimes are new, different and interesting. I missed it while it was gone.

Like someone on the Micklegate thread said - let a place get run down and you attract a certain crowd.

The clock is smart.
