Where are the jobs?

AT THE last count our 22-year-old daughter has applied for 76 jobs and had two interviews. After four years at university she seems to be in the same boat as many graduates – unable to get an interview, never mind a job.

To say she’s rapidly losing her confidence is an understatement. She has debts of almost £40,000. She left with a first-class honours degree in English Law and to say we are proud is an understatement. We’re not rich, we’re not poor; we pay our bills and work hard to survive – as we all do nowadays.

She’s aiming high for a girl from a normal family, wants to be barrister and has worked so hard to get a good qualification, but she can’t get work experience because she hasn’t got the experience to start with.

While she studied in London she worked in a bar for 20 hours a week to pay her way. Are there no jobs out there at all? We’ve helped her as much as we could, but she wants work. Please give our girl a break. Can anybody out there help?

Debbi Weston, Askham Grove York.

Try being in the boat of being unemployed for 8 years and see how the old confidence feels like.

How about volunteering to work with a charity or citizen`s advice, just for a while to get some work experience. It always looks better on a CV than a blank.
