Sounds familiar

ON A recent BBC Radio 4 news programme, a businesswoman from Nottingham related experiences regarding her retail business which had failed not too long ago. She cited that changes in council policy adversely affected trading conditions.

She went on to say these policies included such measures as increasing parking charges, reducing the number of city-centre parking places and generally making it difficult for motorists to enter the shopping areas while, at the same time, cutting services and reducing public transport.

The implication was that the more the authorities made it difficult for the motorist, the more they stayed away, rather than find alternative means to shop in the city.

Does this sound familiar?

Bob Redwood, Main Street, Askham Bryan, York.

Sounds like a very familiar plea from those who believe that car ownership must always be accompanied by its unrestrained use. Do you really need to travel into York by car on every visit? You ain't a million miles from the Askham Bar P&R for example.

Try using the bus 'service' from Huntington a neighbour of mine who receives free bus travel waited for about an hour during the other day for a bus to get into York in the end they gave up went home and used their car. York only has an apology of a bus service from Worst Group and not everyone can cycle, so YES with a pathetic bus service people NEED to use their cars and the cost of parking IS putting them off. And if you are peed off with Worst over their normal 'service' you are hardly going to use their P&R service are you.
