Mosque will add to city

I AM dismayed to read so many questionable objections being raised about the proposed new mosque on Bull Lane. The most common objection appears to be about it fitting in with the surrounding area.

I am not sure how a building would ‘fit in’ with such an eclectic mix of architecture. At present the area around the mosque contains terraced houses, flats, the St Nicholas Fields Centre and its large wind turbine. Of course it was right for genuine technical objects to be raised by such bodies as the Environment Agency, however, some of the objections seem to have little to do with planning concerns. Would we be seeing so many objections if a church were being built in the area?

Personally I think the new mosque will contribute to the cultural and architectural history of York, and visually be a significant improvement on the current building.

Andrew Collingwood, Main Street, Elvington .

There have been a number of objections to this posted on the Press site. What is most disturbing to me are those who object simply because they are anti-Muslim. At least they are honest I suppose.

The massive irony is that a liberal democracy allows such expression against some who would deny that political ethos in the first place

I agree with Mr Collingwood.

If the finished mosque is anything like the artist's impression which appeared in the Press a few months ago, it will be a beautiful addition to our city.

Those correspondents who were worried about York's ancient churches somehow being compromised would do well to remember that medieval Eurpoean architects didn't suddenly wake up one day and think it would be nice to have pointy arches everywhere; they copied them directly from mosques in the middle east, north Africa, and Spain.

Omega Point: if you want to see liberal democracy under threat, look to any number of so-called Christian sects. with many millions of adherents, in the USA which openly demand repeal of the First Amendment. They make no bones about wanting a theocracy.

My name is Kalpana Boodhoo and I am a TV researcher for the BBC. We’re looking to speak to people who have views on the mosque being built in York and their reasons why.

It’s for a possible feature we’re working on. If you’re interested in taking part, please email me at kalpana.boodhoo@bbc.
