Yes and no to that

I HAVE to agree with Roger Westmoreland (Letters, August 30).

The blatant support by our elected representatives for any US-backed effort to destabilise other counties is almost beyond belief. It does make me wonder what kind of hold, or threat, the US administration has over our country. By the time the royal wedding and Olympic flag waving is over, UK news will have avoided reporting in any depth on the US/Israeli led march towards Iran and beyond, or on the worldwide financial crisis. I wonder what trivialities the media will focus on next to keep the masses amused while our leaders continue their games.

Our foreign policy in action is unpleasant to observe, and is much worse for those unfortunate enough to be the pawns of the game.

I suspect that ordinary citizens of all countries would prefer to live in peace and harmony, yet their will is ignored by their so called ‘representatives’ flexing their war machines in their insatiable greed for power and wealth.

PL Hart, Springwood, Haxby , York.

• READERS have been subjected to two rants from Roger Westmore-land in five days August (30 and September 3). This may come as a surprise to him, but he really does not have a clue about where the Iran/Israel nuclear argument is going. What is even more worrying is neither do any of us.

Even more worrying than that is the fact that the real policy-makers in Israel and Iran appear to be trapped on a collision course neither side really wants as no one is able to predict what the political fall-out (not to mention nuclear fall-out) would be if there was an attack on Iranian nuclear facilities.

The Iranian leaders are trapped by their anti-Israel rhetoric and may feel obliged to prove something to the Arab world; the Israeli leaders are trapped by the history of the Jewish people and are not prepared to allow a second Holocaust.

This is an extremely dangerous combination for Israel, Iran and the rest of the world. Cool heads and wise words are needed and one can only pray someone with a clearer idea of what is going on than Mr Westmoreland will come up with a solution before it’s too late.

David Lyon, Kingfisher Close, Huntington , York.

I still don't understand why the US hasn't tried to corner the market on Thorium fission reactors - the only downside is you can't make weapons grade plutonium with them. Sell them to any country who wants them at a bargain price, and you'd soon sort the energy hungry from the war mongers.

Mr Lyon evidently thinks Iran has to prove something to the Arab world. Why exactly is that? Iran is not an Arab country.
The Iranian language is Farsi, not Arabic and their Shia Islamic faith has few friends in Sunni majority Arabia. Moreover the neighourhood is not Arabic, the countries bordering Iran such as Turkey, Iraq, Turkmenistan etc, ar all non Arab countries.

If Mr Lyon wishes to pontificate about the region, he should familiarise himself with the realities of the situation there.

Perhaps Jezreel could do with some lessons about the Middle East before making condescending remarks about someone he knows nothing about. If he had any inkling at all, he would know that Iran has, for some years, been trying to expand its sphere of influence into the Arab world and is looked up to by Shia sections of many Arab countries who feel threatened by Sunni majorities.

Thanks for the response David.

In the letter no mention is made of the fact that there is already a nuclear power in the middle east. Israel has over 300 nuclear weapons made in its Dimona plant and has not signed the nuclear non-proliferation treaty.

Do you agree that Israel should lead by example and divest itsself of its nuclear arsenal?

PL Hart, you have no idea how much the US government does have a hold over our country... and not just on wars. As the US has had a major drought this summer, we've had all of their rain due to a project they have which is interfering with the atmosphere and reversing the direction of energy transfer in the planets magnetic field... and as they knew the project would interere with weather patterns, a few years previous to building they warned everybody that something would change global weather patterns, but that it was a byproduct of every industrial process in order that it could be taxed whilst acting as a smokescreen.
Yes I've detracted from the subject, but the US has a major hold over our country whether we like it or not.

Jezreel, yes I do but only as part of a comprehensive peace agreement between Israel, Iran , the Palestinians and the Arab world in general which ensures Israel's right to exist within agreed and secure borders. Perhaps a touch naive on my part but a man can dream.

Nothing naive about that David, but where are these secure borders for Israel?

Israel has never declared its borders.

If you favour a secure Israel inside the 1969 green line, I am with you, and Israel will be in compliance with international law for the first time in decades.
This would mean clearing all illegal settlements from the West Bank and ending the occupation of Palestine. It would also mean returning the occupied Golan Heights to Syria, and the Shabba Farms territory to Lebanon.

It could certainly lead to a lasting peace in the region.
